JACK (THE COCKATOO)
Jack’s role at the Spa For Pets is to keep staff on their toes. Always willing to loudly express his opinions, he never lets anyone forget his presence. Jack can often be seen (and heard) playing on the floor of the grooming room with the small dogs. Another role for Jack is keeping the school kids entertained with his antics through the Spa window! |
Janet Alexander Thompson
Janet comes to the Spa with a lengthy history of working with animals. Prior to taking over the Spa, she served as the Director of Operations for the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley (WCSV) for six years, overseeing all aspects of the nonprofit from fundraising to public relations, helping it grow into a self-sustaining organization that rehabilitates nearly 5,000 animals per year. She was a founding member of WCSV as well as having served on its Board of Directors for five years prior to that.
Before joining the staff at WCSV, Janet was with the Humane Society Silicon Valley for 11 years, most recently as the Shelter Operations Manager. During her Humane Society tenure, she developed the Special Needs Department, which comprised foster care, breed rescue, wildlife, and exotic animal programs (amongst others).
Janet has been a member of the San Jose Animal Advisory Committee for four years and served on the Santa Clara County Animal Advisory Commission for two terms, providing guidance and consultation to our elected city and county officials.
Marcus Stephen Thompson
Although Marcus doesn’t have any professional animal experience on his résumé, it was in large part due to his affection for and knowledge of animals that he met (and later married) Janet. He has worked for the better part of two decades in the high-tech field, as well as a professional whitewater river-rafting tour guide for many years, in the construction trades, and most recently as a coordinator at a counseling center for the past two years while he pursues a degree in Psychology at a local college.
Janet and Marcus have a home in nearby Campbell, which they share with two dogs, two cats (all four are ‘rescues’), and a macaw. The dogs and Crazybird (CB for short) often join the other staff members’ animals at work (since one of the perks of working with animals is that you get to bring your own with you to work).
Tina, Grooming Services Manager
With over 20 years under her belt, Tina, our certified Master Groomer, can transform even the scruffiest looking dog into a work of art! Breaking into the grooming world when she started as a bather in 1988, she has really “mastered” her trade. Her diverse skills are evident each time one of her charges leaves, freshly coiffed and artfully cut.
Tina lives with her son Justin, and her dogs, cats, and other small animals. When not working, she enjoys kickboxing, wrestling and spending time with her Chihuahuas and other pets.
Yumiko, Groomer
After trying several occupations including bar manager, Yumiko’s love of animals led her to enter the Animal Health Technician Program at Foothill College. She later decided that a career in grooming might suit her better and subsequently graduated from a local grooming school. For the last year and a half, she has loyally worked at Spa for Pets, mastering her learned skills.
Yumiko enjoys spending time with her dogs (two Dobermans and one miniature pinscher), her birds and even some fish! She is a great admirer of renowned dog behavior expert, Cesar Millan. In her spare time, she enjoys riding dirt bikes.
Linda, Bather
With a love of transforming things with her hands, dog grooming and bathing seems a great match for Linda. A genuine speed bather (while always doing an excellent job), Linda’s record for one day is 18 baths and brush outs! With two years of experience under her belt, Linda is currently training under our senior staff to become a groomer. She often practices on her own Shih Tzu, Yoshi, who shares his space with Linda. Yoshi can often be found sitting next to Linda on a nearby grooming table taking in the scene!
Mindy, Office Manager
With a special affinity for animals, Mindy began as a contract pet sitter for the Spa in 1998 while juggling the raising of her three children. Soon thereafter, she took over management of cat boarding for the business. Eventually, her job broadened into a full-time position managing the office. Today with ten years behind her, she is oftentimes the first point of contact for clients, overseeing scheduling, pet sitting, boarding and many other tasks.
Mindy and Jamie, her Cavalier King Charles pup, and Puggle Matey, enjoy visits to the beach and walking the Los Gatos Creek Trail. Mindy is an amateur photographer who loves to capture moments in time digitally.
Ashley, Office Admin
Ashley has been with the Spa for close to three years as a part-time after school and weekend helper. She will be enrolling as a new student at UC Santa Cruz shortly to pursue a career in medicine. Ashley enjoys drawing and painting, which she usually does as her black cat, Jack, and her yellow lab, Bugsy, try to help. Inspired by all sorts of music, she is also attempting to relearn how to play the piano, and keeps her motivation up by going to local concerts.
John, Office Admin
Our after-school team member John has spent over two years at SPF. He currently attends West Valley College, possibly pursuing a business degree. John loves to play sports, particularly baseball, tennis and basketball. Often confused for his identical twin brother Jack (a former employee), he spends as much time as he can at the beach!

TON-E (THE CAT)
Ton-E came to the Spa over five years ago, when she was found wandering aimlessly on the street in San Jose. Her chief function is to greet clients and sunbathe on the front counter in the late afternoon (oftentimes getting in the way of customers trying to pay and check out). Fed a premium diet, Ton-E earns her keep by handing out affection and an occasional playful nip for attention. |
